Process

It had been a long time since I had taken on a really challenging and detailed art piece so I decided to do an action scene on my skateboard. I had been interested in drawing robots and mechs, but hadn’t yet, so I did some studies and poses. I knew I wanted the robot to be fighting a reptillian Kaiju-type creature so I tried out some different designs for that as well. There were a lot of iterations to my design, which you can see in the sketch process video. Initially, I wanted an action bubble that showed insdie of the mech and revealed the pilot with an intense expression. However, it wasn’t looking how I wanted it to and I felt like there was too much detail in the piece overall. So instead, I came up with the idea of giving the robot/mech a pixellated frowny face reminiscent of something like Tamagotchi.

Once I felt I had one that worked I printed it off at a true-to-scale size and used tracing paper to transfer it onto the board. I washed the board with watered-down, dark teal acrylic paint and then started putting in blocks of colors. After painting on the flat colors, I used posca paint pens to add details, linework, and highlights.
