In Search of Earth’s Secrets (ISOES) is a traveling science exhibit created by the International Ocean Discovery Program to bring earth and ocean science to under-served communities in rural and urban areas. After the exhibit’s initial run, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) acquired it and it joined their suite of traveling exhibits. In order to integrate ISOES into the look and feel of their existing exhibits, I refreshed the brand while maintaining the identity and recognizability of the original.
The refreshed logo and identity needed to mesh with OMSI’s other travelling exhibits, which all have a modern, playful, and engaging look. I couldn’t stray too far from the original colors and idea because there were physical materials that couldn’t be adapted with a new look. I knew I wanted a more dynamic position for the globe rather than a head-on view, to show off the layers of the earth in a more interesting composition. The typeface remained the same because it was used throughout all the materials, but I was able to make a more interesting typographic composition playing with size and color. The original exhibit’s tagline was “a pop-up science experience”, which didn’t fit with OMSI’s usual call-to-action taglines. The exhibits team and I tested several different taglines but ended up with “Explore the Seafloor” for its alliteration and intrigue.
After reviewing my first draft with OMSI’s Senior Designer, I made changes and created a suite of marketing deliverables for museums that will be renting the exhibit in the future, including animated ads. For digital ads and social media posts I created templates for the museums to use with spaces for their own museum’s logo. I also compiled a brief brand guideline and package of all the fonts and logo variations.
