Exploring different methods of Lettering

Interlocking Text

All of these methods of lettering were inspired by the House Industries Lettering Manual by Ken Barber. For this I explored different ways of interlocking letters through sketching. The best sketch used the word unscrupulous which is one of my favorite words to say. I polished and worked on making the letters fit perfectly together with even spacing

Animated Type

Animated typography describes moving and rotating letterforms to add personality. These were fairly quick, but I think they have a lot of personality. I used the typeface Salden black by Hans van Maanen and Patrick Griffin.

Cartouche

A cartouche is lettering designing within an object. I knew I wanted to make a t-shirt design for this so I brainstormed some ideas and sketched. I made two designs for this, one is called Built Like a Bandit which used the typeface Discourse.

The other, I hand-lettered and referenced the sharp typeface Taurunum Ferrum. This one I actually screen-printed on shirts, which was awesome to see my design come to life.

Hand-Lettered Quote

The best movie I have seen in a long time (possibly ever) was Everything Everywhere All at Once. The theme really resonated with me so I wanted to create a hand-lettered quote using a line from the movie. In the movie the line is “Every new discovery is just a reminder… we’re all small and stupid.” It is meant to be disheartening and nihilistic, but is reprised later in the movie when they embrace their own meaning in life.
