As my design class approached graduation, there was a lot of conversations on how we would need to “sell” ourselves as designers. This sparked the idea for a catalog selling all of our classmates as action figures. My fellow co-president of the design club and I decided to create a yearbook inspired by action figure collector’s catalogs of the 1980s. This would be a memento of the time we spent together in the design program.
Process
Figma’s FigJam feature was useful for brainstorming and collecting different reference images of vintage catalog design. We divided pieces of the project among the two of us and often worked together on pieces like brainstorming the copy, organizing the photoshoot, or deciding the general layout. My collaborator focused on the cover and the writing, while I focused on layout and photo editing. Throughout the process we would critique eachother’s work and discuss the direction we envisioned. Each photo of our classmates was digitally painted to make them look like plastic action figures with posable joints and the subtle backgrounds use photos from around the art and design building.
