Lost Dog Poster

Typographic Poster Design

Brief

Find a poster in the Grand Junction area for a lost animal or item and redesign it.

Process

I found the poster taped to a lightpost in the downtown area of Fruita. The poster included a lot of information, but it was necessary to keep all of the copy of the original in our redesign. The poor lost dog was named Sarge,

Through my thumbnailing process I made a simplified dog design with exaggerated proportions that I thought was very expressive. I decided, due to how much text I needed to include, I would make the text size into a dense shape with varying sizes to emphasize the important details. After much deliberation, I selected a condensed typeface to make the type shape more solid. For colors I attempted a complimentary color palette, but the yellow and purple were a bit difficult to work with so I shifted the purple to a dark blue.

After the first critique from my peers, I had a lot to work on. The cartoon dog was not as charming as I’d hoped, several people said it looked more like an alligator. So I scratched that and went with a less exaggerated style. I also changed the color palette to an analogous one because the yellow and blue weren’t giving the desired effect. I think the final poster is more visually pleasing than the first draft and much more effective than the original.
